about

This is the hardest yet clearest story to tell. One of my favourite songs of all time is Ty - The Rain. It meant so much to me, as Ty well knew. He broke down the story behind the track to me once and from that point I had always wanted to meet and work with Matt Black (ShortMAN) and Randolph.

In Birmingham, for a while my studio was the Beat Oven alongside the legendary Urban Monk, and sometimes I would cover sessions for him. One of these sessions happened to be ShortMAN. We recorded a couple of tracks and for the next session Matt asked me to engineer again, and this time to bring a friend to sing the chorus. That person happened to be Randolph! It was a surreal experience working with two artists who were so close to my heart musically.

Step A Little Closer was originally recorded to a different instrumental, and Matt agreed for me to create a new version, which features Gareth John on trumpet. Having never had the chance to record with Ty (although we got very close to it) this felt like a full circle moment, and one I will always treasure. The track is subtle, reflective and poignant, with ShortMAN going in depth with life experiences. Randoplh’s vocals are stunning, with a 15 part harmony for the intro!
